2013 Saumur-Champigny "Terres Chaudes" Dom. des Roches Neuves

By farming biodynamically and using only a limited amount of natural fertilizers, Roches Neuves' Thierry Germaine is able to “manage” what are, in essence, “wild” vines which produce miniscule amounts of fruit. Vinification is handled in small batches then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Germain has garnered praise in the European press for his exciting wines, which are always filled with ripe, generous fruit and supple textures.

2014 Saumur-Champigny "Franc de Pied" Dom. des Roches Neuves

Germain took the risky approach of planting a small portion of his vineyard with own-rootstock vines, known in French as "franc de pied". These non-grafted Cabernet Franc vines were planted in sandy soil, which naturally resists the development of phylloxera, with a planting density of 10,000 vines/hectare and are pruned in gobelet en echalas (on stakes as in the ancient vineyards of Mt Etna). The soil is worked with a horse because at this density it is impossible to use mechanized equipment.Annual production 80 cases

2014 Saumur-Champigny 'Clos de l' Echelier' Dom. des Roches Neuves

"Thierry’s latest acquisition, the Clos de l'Echelier is a 2 ha clos on which Thierry had his eyes set since he arrived in Saumur. He finally bought it in 2011. L'Echelier is a limestone-rich vineyard that produces wonderful red wines and a small amount of distinctive whites. There is just 10 cm of top soil, a bit of sand and clay, then Turonian limestone; there is practically no soil to be seen, just rock. Olivier Poussier, the world’s top sommelier, called this cuvée the Chambolle-Musigny of the Loire. Only 1 gr of sulfites added at bottling." -- from the importer

2015 Montlouis "Choisilles" Francois Chidaine

from the importer: "Les Choisilles is a cuvée, usually blended from old vines in the vineyards of Les Epinais, La Taille aux Loups and Clos au Renard. It’s named after a type of black flint called (you guessed it) choisille. Les Choisilles is a concentrated, focused dry wine that often needs several years to develop."

2015 Sancerre 'Enclos des Remparts' Vacheron

Vacheron's rare experimental franc de pied cuvee -- planted on original rootstock in 2008. The wine is outside the village's appelation laws, thus Vin de France, and is officially non-vintage, though the fruit came from the 2015 harvest.

Julien Vedel is second-in-command to Phillipe Foreau of Domaine du Clos Naudin. This, his personal micro-domain of .2 hectares produces only 2 barrels per year from 90-year-old vines grown in a choicest section of Vouvray. Horse-ploughed, vinified with no malo in 50% new / 50% 10-year-old barrels.
